Spain is a popular vacation destination because of its warm climate. Today, the country is home to many different golf courses, as well as a number of golf resorts.

The thought of Spain does not immediately bring to mind images of golf resorts and gorgeous green fairways, but it certainly should. The country is home to beautiful landscape perfect for this sport. You can spend days traveling the many courses they have to offer, or just play a few holes every now and then while you visit all of the other sites that the place has to offer. Golf vacations in Spain are just as common as anywhere else, and you can have just as much fun.

Golfing in the Andaluca Region

The largest number of golf courses and clubs by far are located in the Andaluca region, which includes Almeria, Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Jaen, Huelva, Malaga and Sevilla. You can choose any one of the nearly seventy courses in this region alone. The Marbella Golf Institute in this region is an exclusive and prestigious school that tailors programs for students of all ages and skill level. Students train and play on Santa Clara Golf Course and Los Flamingos. You may not be looking to spend your entire vacation at a school for the game, but it should give you an indication of how seriously it is taken in this country.

The Montecastillo Golf Resort in Cadiz is one of the most popular courses in Spain, and for a good reason. Designed by hall of famer Jack Nicklaus, it attracts visitors from all over the continent and the world, both professional and novice. The resort itself offers extensive lodging and dining options to suit the pickiest of guests. Though it may be a golf resort first, there is no expense spared in pampering every guest that stays at the Montecastillo, whether to play the game or not.

Cadiz - a Great Place for Golfers

Another very popular destination is also in Cadiz, the San Roque Club. This club caters to the wealthy but not just for a tee-off. There is horseback riding, swimming and a number of other activities for the guests traveling with you that don't necessarily want to spend their entire vacation hitting a tiny white ball down a fairway.

Perhaps the most revered course in Spain is the Club de Golf Valderrama. Where is this illustrious getaway? You guessed it - near Cadiz. There's just something about Cadiz that makes it a great place for fairways and players. The combination of the beautiful weather and attractive scenery makes it a golfer's delight and a very popular place for a vacation. Valderrama has stood at the top of Europe's 100 best courses for over 15 years. The par 71 Championship course has been described by seasoned professionals as the best one in the world.

Where To Stay

When planning a good golf vacation in Spain, accommodations are important, of course, but hotels can be found anywhere. If you are truly coming for love of the game, try finding a location that is near a great course or in a central location to be near several courses so you can play at a different one each day. There are golfing packages that can be put together by your travel agency or you can research and put one together yourself. The non-playing parties in your traveling group will probably appreciate it if you stayed in a location that is near other interesting sites. Driving and putting in Spain is wonderful, but don't forget to stop and see the other sights.
